November 17, 2014 — San José Clinic has announced they will recognize Houston Methodist as the Portrait of Compassion honoree for Art with Heart 2015, with honorary event co-chairs Connie Dyer and Cathy Easter. The event is set for Saturday, April 18 at The Corinthian.

“For many years, Houston Methodist has played a vital and integral role in the success of San José Clinic,” explained Paule Anne Lewis, San José Clinic president and CEO. “We are pleased to honor them with the Portrait of Compassion for their dedication and commitment to San José Clinic and the healthcare community of Houston, as well as their support of the safety net community.”

For over 20 years, Houston Methodist has contributed to the mission of San José Clinic by providing operating support, in-kind and diagnostic lab services, academic program rotations through the Clinic and more.

“Houston Methodist is honored to be recognized for our long-standing support to the community through our partnership with San José Clinic at Art with Heart 2015,” said Cathy Easter, senior vice president of Community Benefits at Houston Methodist. Easter will serve as honorary event co-chair with Houston Methodist Board of Directors member Connie Dyer.

With this award, Houston Methodist joins an esteemed group of individuals and organizations who have also been recognized with the Portrait of Compassion, including John S. Dunn Foundation, Phil Morabito of Pierpont Communications, and the Charity Guild of Catholic Women.

In addition to recognizing Houston Methodist, the evening will include cocktails, plentiful hors d'oeuvres, silent auctions of art and jewelry, and a big board auction.

Proceeds from Art with Heart will help support San José Clinic’s mission to provide quality healthcare and education to those with limited access to such services in an environment which respects the dignity of each person. San José Clinic Partners with Randalls and University of Houston to Provide FREE Flu Vaccines

September 21, 2014 —San José Clinic and Randalls Food Markets partnered together to provide 300 free Flu Vaccinations on Saturday, September 20. The free Flu shots, donated by Randalls, were administered to San José Clinic patients and neighborhood residents by Randalls Pharmacy staff and University of Houston student Pharmacists as part of Operation Immunization.

San José Clinic, located at 2615 Fannin, hosted the flu shot clinic on Sat., Sept. 20 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Patients at the monthly Saturday Clinic, as well as other families and Houston residents, visited this convenient, affordable venue for flu vaccinations steadily throughout the day, creating an educational service experience for the student Pharmacists.

“We were so happy when Randalls Pharmacy presented this opportunity to vaccinate 300 people against the flu. This donation allowed the Clinic to address a critical need and provide a vital service that we are challenged to fund each year,” said Paule Anne Lewis, San José Clinic President and CEO.

Regarding this partnership, Randalls Director of Pharmacy Julie Spier said, “Randalls is proud of our longtime relationship with the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and the students’ involvement in Operation Immunization.” Operation Immunization is an awareness campaign that is a collaborative effort of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (AphA-ASP) and the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA). The goal is to protect the public health by raising awareness about the vaccine preventable viral illnesses and immunizations, and subsequently to increase the number of immunized people.

The CDC states that flu activity can begin as early as October. The seasonal flu vaccine is designed to protect against the top three or four flu viruses that research indicates will cause the most illness during flu season, including H1N1. People should begin getting vaccinated soon after the flu vaccine becomes available.

Time and expense at issue for patients who say they can't afford to miss work Houston Chronicle

September 13, 2014 - The Texas Medical Center, where more than two dozen hospitals and academic institutions provide world-class care and conduct groundbreaking research, shimmers like a desert mirage for the estimated 1 million uninsured residents in the area who cannot afford to go there for treatment.

Mary Ancelmo has really branched out in her first collegiate year. This Houston native went around the world to begin her undergraduate work at Tel Aviv University in Israel, then came back home for the summer when she was awarded a prestigious internship at San José Clinic  through the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program (CSJP).

Sixty non-profits in the Houston area are part of the CJSP program, and more than 1,400 students applied to be a part of the internship program. When Mary reviewed the organizations participating, San José Clinic was an appealing choice. “I read the Clinic’s mission and history and its goals and who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?” Mary said. “You have volunteers dedicating their time to provide healthcare for people who don’t have resources. I knew San José Clinic was an amazing place.”

Mary is looking forward to her eight weeks this summer as the Clinic’s Community Outreach Intern, planning the Back-to-School party for approximately 150 children of Clinic families. “I am really looking forward to seeing my weeks of work come together at the party, giving me a better understanding of and admiration for what it takes to make a difference in a community,” Mary explained.

“This internship has a big impact on our patients and their families, through the Back-to-School Party,” said Donna Nisenson, San José Clinic Special Events Manager. “We are helping to start these children’s school year off right by providing necessities that they may otherwise have gone without.”  The Back-to-School party provides school supplies, backpacks, uniforms, and more, available through generous support from community partners.

Just her short time as a CJSP intern has already made an impact on Mary’s plans for the future. “Through work experience in non-profit organizations like San José Clinic, a great appreciation for the dedicated people who work to help others is being fostered in interns like me. It’s truly inspiring.” After her experience at San José Clinic, Mary now plans on working towards her Masters in non-profit management, focusing on finding organizations that help others realize their potential.
