Art
with Heart 2008 Begins |
|
Sue
Murchison, Director of Development for San José
Clinic and her fundraising committee, set Clinic
goals high. Following a successful 2007 Art
with Heart event that welcomed over 500 guests and
netted over $100,000, they are determined to organize
an unforgettable Art with Heart event in 2008. With the assistance of San José Clinic board member,
Larry Massey, Ms. Murchison made arrangements to
relocate the event from Lawndale Art Center to One
Allen Center. With the dramatically larger
facility, event Chair Ruth Dougherty and the
fundraising committee expect to increase the number
of auctioned art pieces, including high school
student art work, the number of volunteers, and those attending. The number of
features artists has increased from one to three and
include Susu Meyer, Kay Sarver, and Arthur Turner.
Those interested in contributing two-dimensional art
work, volunteer for various committees, underwrite
the event or make an in-kind donation are welcome to
contact
artwithheart@sanjoseclinic.org or by calling 713-490-2603.

Texas
Mission of Mercy Dental Program Overwhelming Success |
(Back
to Top) |
|
What
a weekend. The Texas Mission of Mercy was held
November 2nd and 3rd, 2007 at
the Spring Branch Family Development center and was,
by all accounts, a fantastic success with 909
patients treated over two days. Volunteer dentists
and hygienists provided over $320,000 of dental care
to those who are tragically underserved.
The Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) is a charitable
branch of the Texas Dental Association (TDA). Dr.
R. Lee Clitheroe was
asked to co-chair Houston’s first TMOM. A goal of
725 volunteers was surpassed when 200 individuals
arrived during the event, despite knowing it was
fully staffed. They wanted to be a part of the
event and help out where they could. For the
first time in TMOM’s 15-year history, the
Texas Dental Association quit accepting volunteers
almost two weeks before the event. Volunteers
donated time, equipment, service, support,
professional skills – or all of these.
Andrew J. Robertson, Program Associate at the Texas
Dental Association Smile Foundation adds that the Foundation's office received 2,489 email
messages requesting information about participating
in TMOM while there were hundreds of email messages
from potential patients wanting to obtain
treatment. At the 2007 Texas Mission of Mercy
event, dental treatment included a higher than usual
number of smile restorations, including a large
number of prosthetic cases, the first 3-unit bridge,
and a record setting number of endodontic
procedures.
From the beginning, the leadership of Reverend Mark
Woodward, Susan McKee and Dr. Tommy Harrison made
this a great event in which to participate. Each
patient was greeted with a smile and treated with
respect and compassion. Some patients were so
impressed with how they were treated, they offered
to volunteer.
Tommy Harrison, DDS, was the event co –chair with
Dr. Clitheroe. Rev. Mark B. Woodward is with West
University United Methodist Church while Susan McKee
is with Greater Houston Dental Society.

San José Clinic Health Complex
to be Developed in
Downtown Houston |
|
"It is an exciting time
of growth for San José Clinic! The Clinic is
entering a new chapter in providing healthcare to
uninsured persons in Harris County and
surrounding counties! Soon, the Clinic will operate
in a new facility that will help us break down
barriers to healthcare access. We expect to combine
San José Clinic’s strengths with the strengths of
other organizations under one roof. We’re grateful
for the steadfast support of everyone who is making
this possible.”

CEO

In 2006, San José
Clinic's board members set a strategic plan
to relocate and expand services. That plan and quiet
prayer will become a reality through the combined
efforts of CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare and
the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the
Incarnate Word. CHRISTUS Foundation for Healthcare
purchased a Midtown city block
and will raise the capital funds to create a
55,000 square foot health complex on a recently
cleared Midtown city block. They will also build and
maintain the new building.
The building also will house many social service
programs offered by Catholic Charities of the
Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and other
organizations. This will provide patients and
clients with a continuum of health and social
services in one location. This
will be a
historic change that
will affect the greater Houston area.
Once funding is in place, architectural plans and
construction documents will be completed. The site,
bordered by Fannin, McGowen, San Jacinto, and Dennis
streets, is one block east of the MetroRail and near
several bus routes, offering easy access to patients
and volunteers traveling via public and private
transportation as well as doctors traveling from the
Texas Medical Center. The Clinic expects to break
ground in 2009 and relocate from its current
location across from Minute Maid Park to the new
building as early as 2010.
In
preparation for the changes to come, San José Clinic
has launched several internal initiatives,
collectively named Mission 2010, with a goal of
ensuring that Clinic operations, processes, and
patient care are documented and are patient
centered, efficient and operationally sound prior to
the transition to the new building.

Downtown and Spring Branch Locations Consolidated |
(Back to Top) |
|
San José Clinic opened its first satellite in
the Spring Branch Family Development Center in
December 2001. For over five years, San José Clinic
- Spring Branch provided pediatric, women’s health
and dental services in a unique collaborative
environment with a cadre of social service
providers.
Throughout 2007, San José Clinic has consolidated
all Spring Branch services at San José Clinic –
Spring Branch into the downtown location. Realizing
that many individuals living in the surrounding
Spring Branch area have some form of health
insurance and are ineligible for Clinic services,
coupled with plans to replace and enlarge the
downtown facility, led to merging services. Dental
services were merged in early 2007, with a
subsequent 15% increase in dental patient visits. Gynecology services were transferred in March. The
family practice contract physician at San José
Clinic – Spring Branch was reassigned to the
downtown clinic in July. Now, a family practice,
including pediatrics and immunizations, is available
Monday through Friday. It also enables a walk-in
clinic that provides medical care to adults and
children without an appointment. Uniting services at
one location aligns energy and resources and allows
San José Clinic to prepare for the future transition
into a new building.
The Spring Branch Family Development Center is
working diligently to identify a healthcare provider
that accepts various forms of insurance and can meet
the needs of the surrounding community more fully. |
"Although we will miss our partners in Spring Branch,
consolidating our two sites fits perfectly with our
strategic goal of operating one facility. It also
allows us to focus on our expanded new facility
where professional volunteers and staff can continue
to address the ever increasing needs and demands for
primary, specialty, and dental care for the
uninsured.”

Three Additional Affiliates |
|
San José Clinic teaching affiliations and other
partnerships remain a key element of volunteer
staffing and include long-term collaborations with
important partners. Three affiliations have
been added to our esteemed partners:
o Carole & Ronald Krist Samaritan Center for Counseling &
Education. This partnership allows an on-site
counseling service for Clinic patients who are in
need of such care.
o
Baylor College of Medicine's Department of Family and
Community Medicine. Collaboration with Baylor
allows volunteer licensed physicians to supervise
medical students who enroll in classes such as
"Underserved Care Clinics-Volunteering."
o
Kingwood Medical Center Podiatry Residency Program. Through this affiliation, Kingwood Medical Center
podiatry residents can work alongside volunteer
podiatrists at San José Clinic. |
