Charity Guild of Catholic Women |
In 1921, Houston boasted a population of 139,000 and was beginning to show signs of growth to come.
During this same time,
Monsignor Walsh, Pastor of Annunciation Catholic Church, was gravely concerned about the health of
babies and mothers in his parish near downtown Houston. He called
upon volunteer physicians and 59 women who were to become the
founding members of the Charity Guild of Catholic Women.
In their first fundraising appeal, each woman gave $1 |
 |
to raise a total of $59, dedicated to helping mothers and
infants at San José Clinic. To this day, the Charity Guild of
Catholic Women continues as one of the leading supporters of
families within San José Clinic through patient outreach events,
including the Children's Easter party, the Back-to-School
Festival, and the Children's Christmas party. Their
contributions, made in the spirit of service, continue to unfold
and have a meaningful impact on the lives of many.

Lilly Sill,
Charity Guild member and long time advocate of our annual
Children's Christmas party, passed away in 2007 before the holidays.
Lilly's love for the children motivated her to work tirelessly
so that each child received a gift for Christmas. She will
be greatly missed. |

Children's Christmas
party |
This oldest patient program began
in the Clinic’s early years and has become a Christmas tradition for
Clinic patients and staff. The Children’s Christmas
party is for young San
José Clinic patients, from birth to 12 years, who are anticipating Christmas but whose parents may not have the means to provide them with gifts. Those who are invited to the party are among the
neediest families of the Clinic.
Children and their
parents who attend the event enjoy musical entertainment, games and party treats
before receiving gifts from Santa Claus and his volunteer elves. They experience a fun and special day at the Clinic
and leave with a keepsake Polaroid family picture
with Santa and hope for a memorable Christmas. The
Clinic receives support from many individuals and community
groups who sponsor
gift drives and volunteer on the day of the party.
If you or your organization would like to donate
toys, please contact the
Special Projects Coordinator.
